The movement is in one of my Molnija (read: MOL-nee-yah) pocket watches, I forget which.



This is what I call a proper watch movement! It's 36 mm in diameter.



Truth to tell, this is the cal. 3602 movement in its 2000s version -- yellow plates (brass?), no central stone, other simplifications, rough machining and no decoration while early Molnija movements were beautifully decorated.
As such it is much despised by watch collectors here in Russia who don't have much respect for the Molnija movements of this particular late vintage believing them somehow to be inferior to Molnija movements of almost every other period but, whether true or not, I don't share their snobbery.



The movement has yellow (brass?) plates -- such movements were made in the 2000s, but with markings. There's some number, it is some kind of movement identification number but not a serial number, RU for Russia, the caliber designation - 3602 and a Molnija watch factory logo next to it.

I love watches with green in them. I was drawn to that colour as far as I can remember. Without fail, I will always used green in all my art projects when I was in school. Up to this point, I have collected 10 watches in green. This Seiko 5 Sports SRPA89K1 will be 11th green watch.

This watch is the latest in a series of limited edition Seiko 5 Sports watches issued by Seiko. It is important to note that “limited edition” in this context is more like a limited production run. Seiko does not set a limit in the number of production but instead limit the production window in its factories. Since no official word from the brand about this particular series, it is extremely difficult to gauge how many examples will be out there. Hence, the best advice for budding collectors is not to buy it due to the ‘limited edition’ classification but purely on whether it appeals to you.

This watch appeals to me because of a few factors. The first is the turtle shaped casing. Compared to the traditional round casing, a turtle shaped casing sits better on a wrist. The angle of the casing to the wrist has a natural incline that facilitate it from snagging into shirt cuffs. It also effortlessly reduce the size effect as our eyes automatically focuses on the smaller dial compared to the bigger floor plate of the casing itself. The second is the symmetrical dial design. The watch has a date complication. Instead of putting anywhere else, the Seiko designers placed the date aperture at the 6 o’clock position. This makes the displays on the dial symmetrical and pleasing to the eye. The third is the carbon fibre weave pattern on the dial. Made from carbon fibre, the pattern on the dial has a 3D look with a sense of depth and glossiness. The fourth is the short downward curving lugs. It has the tendency to make the large watch sits better on the wrist when compared to standard straight lugs. If you have a wrist circumference of 6.5 inches, a typical watch of this size with standard lugs will have an overhang over your wrist. However, the overhang is minimised by the shorter and curved lugs. Combined with the two-toned Nato strap, the watch looks visually refreshing.

*** Ich liebe die Verpackung. Alles mit neutralen, subtilen Tönen überzeugt mich sofort. Als ich die Uhr zum ersten Mal auspackte, war mein erster Gedanke: Oh Gott, ich werde es brechen, während ich versuche, die Riemen zusammen zu klemmen. Der Mechanismus ist wirklich sehr einfach und ist eine gute Möglichkeit, verschiedene Farben zu wechseln.
Vergleicht man dies mit meiner Rose Gold Uhr, kann man sofort erkennen, dass der Natsu einen minimalistischeren Look hat. Ich muss sagen, in den ersten paar Tagen, in denen ich die Uhr trug, dachte ich, ich vermisse es irgendwie, "The Fifth" auf das Zifferblatt geschrieben zu haben, aber nachdem ich es ein bisschen länger getragen habe, liebe ich wirklich den einfachen Look. Diese Uhr ist subtil, unaufdringlich und gleichzeitig ein großartiges Modestück. Die Farbe (da ich auf diese Farbe voreingenommen bin) ist einfach perfekt für jede Jahreszeit. Ich mag auch sehr, wie die Lederriemen zwei Schlaufen haben, anstatt die zwei im New York Classic-Bereich. Es bedeutet nur, dass Sie das Band nicht zufällig verlieren.

Cartier Watches

Having looked at Rolex watches for the last three articles I thought it was time to freshen things up a bit and take look at Cartier watches for this latest installment. Although Cartier watches were turned into a globally famous brand by three members of the Cartier family, it was actually their grandfather Louis Cartier who first invented this now classic watch.

The origin of Cartier watches has surprisingly similar roots as Rolex watches, both being based in aviation. As a aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont commented to his friend, Louis Cartier, that pocket watches weren’t suited to use during flights and concurrently asked him if he could design something more fitting. Although the first wrist watch was invented in 1868 it was Cartier’s wrist watch, originally designed for Santos, which was largely responsible for helping to make the wrist watch more popular than the pocket watch (which had previously been the most popular form of timepiece). In fact the Santos Cartier watch is credited as being the first wristwatch designed for men. The “Santos” went on sale to the public in 1911, although the original was created seven years earlier.

Continuing the story on we learn that Louis’ son, Alfred Cartier and his three grandsons were responsible for the expansion of Cartier watches from a popular item to a globally famous brand. Alfred himself was a jeweller as well as a watchmaker and, with help from his sons, opened two new shops; one in London and one in New York. A further seven shops were set up around the world by the time the Second World War occurred. With the War finished Pierre Cartier became head of the business and president of Cartier International, which itself grew to become a multinational organisation.

Cartier has remained so special because they have always made wristwatches in a variety of shapes, round, square, tortue, tonneau, rectangular, and oval, rather than limiting themselves to one or two shapes. Their designs have always managed to be classic and modern at the same time. A Cartier watch can always be relied upon to make a fashion statement. Their emphasis an quality and design was a heritage from their beginnings as a jewellers. Their jewellery for women has always been among the most beautiful in the world, and remains a collectors pleasure. Cartier have consistently used the best quality for their watch cases, dials and movements, and this has reaped rich rewards as their customers return time after time to acquire more of the unique Cartier Magic.
